Blog Post 3 – Ongoing Field Observations

For the research project I will be looking at which species of birds are most common on the Thompson Rivers University campus.

When observing the different birds on campus I have noticed that there are quite a large number of larger scavenger type birds (ex magpies). These birds are not just seen in the central part of campus which I had discussed in previous forum posts but all over campus (from House 9 all the way to the Ken Leppin Building).

Since the TRU campus is not a natural environment (like marsh land or forest) there is a greater amount of human traffic. My hypothesis therefore is that, due to the increase in human presence, there will be more scavenger type birds, such as magpies, crows, pigeons, etc.

  1. Hi!
I’ve been on campus, and I also noticed more abundance of magpies and crows compared to other birds present. Its so cool that you’ll be studying them!

Your prediction and hypothesis are unclear. For your prediction, are you going to categorize all the bird species present on campus? What would the other categories be? Also, for your hypothesis, which aspect of human presence are you investigating? For example, are there more scavenger bird species present due to more food scraps from humans? Finally, how are you measuring the bird species present?

I’m excited to see how it turns out!

    Cheers!

  2. Hey,

I am curious as to why you think there will be more scavenger birds where there is more human traffic/ more of a human population?? Has there been a specific reason that you think this? Such as, there is more waste where there is larger human population, therefore there is more for the scavengers birds to feed on?

    Cheers,

    Janys
